What if I am Arrested?

The police officer or other person arresting you must tell you that you are under arrest and what you are under arrest for.

If you are arrested, you must tell the police officer your name, date of birth and address. If you do not, you will be held in custody until the police can identify you.

You have a right to speak with a lawyer before answering any other questions. There is a telephone number that the police must provide to you so you can speak with the 24 hour on call lawyer at no cost to you. You should ask to speak with the 24 hour on call lawyer before answering any other questions.

You also have a right to speak with any adult you choose before answering any other questions. You should ask to speak with an adult before answering any other questions.

You should not sign anything until you have spoken to the 24 hour on call lawyer.

If you have been arrested it is in your best interests to be respectful to the police and ask to speak with a lawyer immediately.
